Primary Purpose:

This is a manager-level position which may be responsible for collecting, reviewing, and analyzing data to determine relationships, trends, and issues and may assist with the collection and correlation of data necessary to maintain state insurance programs including rates, rules, and forms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop pricing and/or reserving indication projections by performing analysis that involves retrieving, reviewing and analyzing data and populating actuarial models
  • Analyze and implement  changes to existing pricing models and/or reserving models as well as the development of enhancements to improve prediction accuracy
  • Create models to improve data analysis and understanding of business results
  • Develop and present recommendations based on data analysis
  • Identify issues that could adversely impact the business and/or brand
  • Communicate concerns and propose solutions to remedy the identified issues
  • Provide support for required filings and follow-up questions from regulators or auditors related to pricing or reserving models
  • Make recommendations for changes to improve profitability and/or growth by analyzing historical financial results while accounting for future trends
  • Communicate and collaborate with business partners in other functional areas, including product, finance, accounting, claims, IT, and senior management
  • Build relationships with external business partners, primarily third-party administrators
  • Analyze the impacts and benefits of new products and rating characteristics and propose changes to existing rating plans and products
  • Identify, implement and documents improvements to processes (spreadsheets, coding, etc.)
  • Helps develop and define company strategies with key stakeholders
  • Ability to develop and prove or disprove theories by analyzing historical company and/or  industry data
  • Ability to manage a team, ensuring that the team is meeting deadlines and that individual team members are developing actuarial and business skills

Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • 6+ years of experience in an Actuarial capacity or ASA designation
  • Strong computer skills with high proficiency in managing and manipulating data in Excel and Access
  • Demonstrated understanding of relational databases, data extraction, and ability to organize and analyze complex data sets
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and project skills
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to project results, work with ambiguity, solve problems, make decisions, identify trends/patterns within data sets, and communicate root causes
  • Experience with SAS/SQL/VBA programming
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of state and federal insurance regulations
  • Ability to interpret data, understand next steps in analysis and offer recommendations based on the results of the analysis
  • Meet multiple deadlines and work on multiple projects at the same time
  • Ability to manage a team of other actuaries
  • Ability to work extra hours

Desired Skills:

  • Bachelor or advanced degree in insurance, actuarial science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, risk management, economics, business administration or related analytics-oriented discipline
  • 6+ years of experience
  • ASA designation
  • Pursuing FSA designation
  • Proficient with Microsoft Access
  • Proficient with VBA
