Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for investigating, evaluating and negotiating the resolution of Personal Injury Protection litigated claims within authority levels while mitigating damages to achieve cost effective claims outcomes. Must have expertise in commercial and personal lines, as well as coverage, contractual and legal issues. Develop and execute litigation strategy and manage the activities of assigned defense counsel. This is a remote position to be based in Michigan.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contact all parties involved in a claim to complete full investigation of the facts and exposure relevant to the claim
  • Identify potential coverage issues and refer claims to Claims Manager as needed
  • Analyze information, including depositions, expert reports, attorney evaluations, and medical reports, gained from discovery during litigation in order to evaluate assigned claims to determine the extent of loss. Assign medical or other experts to case and arrange for medical examinations when necessary.
  • Process incoming calls and correspondence from insureds, claimants and agents regarding questions or problems associated with claims. Interact with underwriters and agents on claim resolution.

  • Accurately update the claim file to reflect analysis based on the developed investigation.

  • Make appropriate reserve recommendations based on the medical and liability information that has provided in a timely fashion.

  • Obtain and review budgets from panel counsel to determine defense strategies and accurate expense reserves for the claim.

  • Provide effective and timely communication to all internal and external stakeholders regarding claim status and other inquiries such as fraud and subrogation recovery
  • Support claims workflow efficiency by accurately documenting claim progress, referring high risk exposures outside authority levels and seeking opportunities that enhance operational knowledge

Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Basic understanding of the principles and processes for providing customer service including meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Utilize effective communication to influence and persuade decision makers; understand the needs and goals of customers and actively look for ways to meet them; mediate and resolve conflict
  • Ability to effectively manage one’s own time
  • Ability to leverage technical knowledge to make cost-effective decisions
  • Ability to complete tasks attentively and thoroughly with attention to detail
  • Utilize established procedures to guide decision-making
  • Maintain a professional, poised and positive demeanor


Desired Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • 6+ years of experience in claims and/or handling auto claims
  • Possess working knowledge of Seibel Claims System
  • Possess working knowledge of claims administration best practices and procedures
  • Possess working knowledge of insurance products and services
  • Possess an understanding of relevant laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions
  • Possess an understanding of market trends and organizational strategies
