Job Summary:

The Software Engineer – Associate Manager puts the system user at the center of everything they do; ensuring that users receive the most value out of the products being developed.  The Software Engineer Associate Manager develops test driven code all day and every day.  They own and manage running their application in production and is accountable for the success of their digital products through achieving key performance indicators.  The Software Engineer Associate Manager selects, leads, counsels, motivates, sets expectations and evaluates small to medium teams. This individual will assist with the development and maintenance of detailed computer program design, coding, testing, debugging and implementation as required by project goals. Additionally,  they advise direct reports on administrative policies and procedures, risks, issues, problem resolution, and priorities. The Software Engineer Associate Manager influences team and business results. 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a player coach in leading by example in day to day execution of the build out of technical product capabilities

  • • Manage small team of developers dedicated to an application

  • • Design, develop and test software applications

  • • Maintain systems by identifying and correcting software defects

  • • Create technical specifications and unit test plans

  • • Work with QA to align understanding of requirements and to develop system test plans

  • • Work as part of an Agile development team to solve problems and develop projects in a fast paced environment

  • • Follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job

  • • Demonstrate a basic degree of creativity and problem solving skills

  • • Follow the established software development life cycle

  • • Follow established coding standards and naming conventions

  • • Support applications using software development methodologies including structured programming, documentation, design and code review

  • • Work with business analysts and application users to define and design robust user centric application solutions ​
  • Leads and participates in retrospectives; demonstrating and encouraging each participant to provide feedback with empathy
  • Leads the effort of shaping the architecture and design of the product
  • Serves as the anchor of the team and practices technical leadership; helping guide the team in choosing the right technology, solving technical problems, and resolving any technical conflicts within the team
  • Coaches the team and leads daily practices of using paired programming and test-driven development in writing software and building products

  • • Collaborate with database resources to ensure robust and complete data access and manipulation

  • • Collaborate with IT Operations to ensure hardware and software are aligned to deliver business requirements

  • • Mentor junior and other new developers

Preferred Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 5 or more years of related experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • None

Functional Skills

  • Strong knowledge of the .NET framework (4.5 and higher)

  • • Experience developing .Net applications using .NET Core

  • • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and SOLID design principles

  • • Proficient in C# with good understanding of VB.NET

  • • Proficient in ASP.NET MVC, Blazor, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and JQuery
  • ​Experience coding and leading a team using Blazor
  • Experience working in an agile environment; experienced working in a paired programming/engineering model
  • Experience in Test Driven Development; including knowledge and experience in testing frameworks
  • Able to learn new technologies, and teach other members of the team(s)
  • Able to work effectively across organizational and geographical boundaries
  • Experience developing software in different programming languages.
  • Experience and knowledge in developing REST APIs including tooling for documentation, versioning, service discovery/registration, testing and management; experience using API gateways a plus
  • Experience in backend development design and implementation; database (relational, NoSQL, caching), messaging and big data development, implementation and optimization
  • Experience developing continuous integration, continuous delivery and continuous deployment pipelines for distributed apps
  • Experience with code review and evaluation

  • • Good at understanding requirements and estimation

  • • Good team player, have ability and willingness to mentor junior developers

  • • Have passion for learning new technologies and enhancing existing skills

  • • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • • Self-starter that can work well in a team environment

  • • Proactive issue resolution with a positive attitude

  • • Ability to adapt and respond in a rapidly evolving business environment ​

National General prides itself on offering our employees a robust Total Rewards package which includes base salary.  The base range offered for the role is: $82,000- $125,000 and may vary based on internal equity, and job-related skills, knowledge and experience; among other factors.  Other financial components may be added as part of the competitive compensation package, in addition to a full range of benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
