Job Title:  IT Facilities Technician III


Primary Purpose:

Responsible for day to day operations of various IT datacenters and IDF/MDF closets, which contain large amounts of IT infrastructure hardware including servers, SAN arrays, and networking appliances. Through working closely with various IT owners, assist with the management of datacenter centric equipment, maintenance, space planning, HVAC, and fire suppression systems. Coordinate equipment inspections and required maintenance, power distribution management to include generators, UPS, and ancillary equipment.  Work closely with Facilities Management to manage new facility buildout as it relates to IT low voltage cabling, IDF/MDF rooms, video conferencing, and TV installations. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Install, troubleshoot, and manage structured cabling and raceways within the datacenter and IDF/MDF environments
  • Oversee routine maintenance and maintain general cleanliness of the datacenters and IDF/MDF environments
  • Coordinate and/or perform equipment termination and extending circuits, including POTS, T1, T3, Ethernet, and Fiber
  • Act as on call point of contact for all fire suppression systems, electrical, and HVAC concerns within the corporate datacenters in a 24x7 operational environment
  • Manage datacenter electrical systems and sub-systems to include generator and UPS devices at numerous facilities
  • Evaluate, diagnose, troubleshoot, re-configure, and test equipment as necessary
  • Coordinate with Facilities, other IT teams, and contractors as needed for the purpose completing projects / work orders efficiently
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems to include HVAC and fire suppression
  • Create and maintain documentation that outlines support procedures and contract information, vendor management, and asset disposal procedures
  • Develop, maintain, and report on datacenter costs, trending, and opportunities for reduction of associated expenses
  • Stay abreast of datacenter technological advances and market trends, to recognize opportunities for improvement and / or cost reduction
  • Ensure datacenter policies and procedures are documented, communicated, and adhered to
  • Coordinate and mange decommissioning of hardware and perform eWaste/recycling operations


Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • 5+ years of datacenter facilities management experience in an enterprise environment
  • 2+ years performing at journeyman or technician level, or the equivalent in a critical environment
  • Operational understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems used in a datacenter environment, including: Feeders, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, Chillers, Air handling units and CRAC units.
  • Knowledge of telco technologies, systems, and circuits
  • Experience in large, multi-datacenter environments with similar responsibilities for environmental hardware and associated devices
  • Ability to manage 3rd party vendors, external IT consultants, and implementation teams as it pertains to datacenter HW
  • Must be able to read technical documents, drawings and prints, and direct placement of equipment
  • Understanding of Datacenter power distribution and Datacenter architectures and concepts
  • Must be able to properly tailor communication to, and work effectively with, both business and technical teams
  • Ability to communicate intelligently and effectively with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on these systems.
  • Must be self-motivated and work independently
  • Have the ability to lift and move 50lbs equipment daily
  • High degree of initiative, mature judgment, and discretion
  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to travel up to 25%


Desired Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an IT related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, professional training, and work experience
  • Relevant industry certifications such as Datacenter Operations Management (DCOM), Datacenter Infrastructure Specialist (DCIS) or CCNA Data Center certifications
  • 5+ years of datacenter facilities management experience within SSAE 18 accredited environments or publicly traded large corporations
  • 2+ years performing at journeyman or technician level within a data center, hospital, or power plant environment
  • BICSI and CompTia Certifications
  • Project Management experience and certifications
  • Experience in datacenter migrations and consolidations
