Primary Purpose:

Under general supervision, responsible for the more complex auditing activities associated with performing regulatory, contractual, and operational audits.  This is the most senior skill level with leadership duties. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead/assist with the more complex internal (operational and contractual), MARS/SOX audits, reviews, validation, and compliance
  • Prepares auditing and operational analysis/results for inclusion in presentations to Senior Management and the Board of Directors (Audit Committee).
  • Acts as content expert to perform reviews, validations, and compliance assessments and then track through remediation of action plans provided by issue owner.Additionally, provides consultation to other areas within the company.Function in liaison role with NGHC projects.
  • Participates in the review and evaluation of existing and proposed internal controls of manual and automated operations to safeguard company assets and to comply with government regulations
  • Reviews accounting/auditing issues and procedures and makes recommendations regarding the implementation of accounting policies
  • Lead/assist with additional audit assignments as requested
  • Works with external auditors, insurance examiners, and external auditors to answer questions and provide backup
  • Ability to maintain and grow relationships with internal and external customers using effective communication and interaction skills
  • Ability to multi- task while independently and effectively prioritizing work using time management, initiative, project management and problem solving skills
  • Attend training and development seminars to enhance job performance
  • Leadership responsibility, which may include providing input to evaluating performance, recommending salary changes, assisting in the interviewing and selection of new personnel, and providing training and development to direct reports
  • Direct support staff in the preparation of report/department operations.
  • Review/approve work prepared by less experienced personnel



Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • Typically has a minimum of 7 years of prior accounting/auditing and auditing experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of statutory accounting principles (STAT)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Sarbanes Oxley regulation (SOX)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of related accounting principles and transactions based on assigned responsibilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computerized accounting and financial reporting systems
  • Thorough knowledge Risk Management
  • Comprehensive auditing skills with respect to controls and control validation; operational with ability to recognize improvement opportunities
  • Critical thinker with an ability to analyze information and to evaluate the implications of a course of action or strategy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish working relationships with individuals at varying levels within the organization
  • Effective leadership skills to include problem solving skills
  • Advanced in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and VISIO)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
