Primary Purpose:

The Medical Risk Analyst improves risk management capabilities through claims/medical research analysis, recommends changes to policies and procedures in order to enhance product profitability as well as providing clinical expertise to the company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Medical consultant for all accident/health lines of business including underwriting, actuary, compliance, legal, distribution partners, third party administrators, and other departments
  • Liaison to medical director consultants for the Health Management department
  • Apply clinical expertise and sound judgement in review of medical records in accordance with policy contracts. 
  • Monitor the application of policies and procedures to enhance product profitability and improve risk management
  • Analyze claims/medical research to identify trends, threats, and opportunities

  • Bachelor Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • 5+ years of clinical experience
  • Must have prior experience in health insurance and underwriting
  • Ability to analyze and interpret medical records, physician office notes, medical literature, CPT/ICD10 coding, EOBs/submitted claims, and medical review data
  • Ability to apply contract language to review of medical records
  • Must be familiar with evidence-based clinical studies, possess an awareness of risk management, and display sound judgment
  • Ability to analyze medical information (provided, and/or researched and/or known from professional experience) and understand its actual and potential risk as it relates to offering an applicant insurance coverage
  • Experience in data/claims analysis, research and interpretation;  the ability to analyze data/claims and draw valid conclusions
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to process complex data and information from multiple sources, make decisions based on this data, and effectively communicate the related required actions to a broad audience
  • Ability to present a professional image and to encourage peers to do the same
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to think strategically and conceptually with a focus on impacts and outcomes
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and the corresponding ability to quickly provide sound decisions and recommendations with less than complete information
