Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for the investigation of both new and existing Bodily Injury claims of a serious and complex nature within the limit of authority.  Activities include but are not limited to: face to face contact, statements from insureds, claimants and witnesses associated with claims.  Serve as mentor for others and assists others with projects as needed.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as mentor for others and assists with projects, and expected to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Conduct kinesthetic interviews of insureds, claimants and/or witnesses
  • Develop investigative action plans, perform necessary database searches and independently adapt investigative plans to changing needs of the file
  • Participate in scene and vehicle examinations which includes reviewing photographs, canvassing for witnesses, reporting duties, clinic inspections, and possibly requesting retrieval and the setting of Independent Medical Examinations
  • Obtain, analyze and summarize police and other database reports, and provider licensing checks
  • Work in connection with Claims and SIU departments to effect proper investigation, evaluation and negotiation of claims
  • Work predominately in the field with occasional desk work
  • Track effectively incoming workload as well as outcomes of investigations and recommendations made for further coverage review
  • Analyze, evaluate and adjust claims within limit of authority in compliance with statutory regulations and fair claim practice, and make decisions on best options upon request
  • Contact with loss parties within set time period


Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • 5+ years of experience in any combination of the areas: SIU field investigation, Personal Injury Protection handling and/or Bodily Injury claims handling in the P&C auto sector
  • Prior experience in successfully developing investigative action plans, performing necessary database searches and independently adapting investigative plans to changing needs of the file
  • Prior experience in proactivity obtaining assignments and establishing clear and appropriate recommendations
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manipulate large amounts of investigative material in a timely fashion
  • Ability to travel up to 75% of the time
  • Possess valid U.S. State-issued driver’s license
  • Ability to address difficult situations with tact and diplomacy, but be able to elicit the information required for investigation
  • Self-starter
  • Effective organization and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure and adhere to project deadlines
  • Possess investigative background with experience in handling investigations, evaluations and negotiations of No-Fault and Bodily Injury claims
  • Possess an understanding of the applicable State Insurance law, investigation procedures, legal and medical terminology
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people (i.e. POP/BI Teams, SIU, Underwriting and Management)


Desired Skills:

  • Possess external investigations experience in the Insurance industry
  • Possess experience in the investigation of insurance fraud as an SIU investigator
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Possess experience with advanced interviewing
  • Successful completion of a Kinesthetic interview course
