Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for providing support for all federal tax matters, with a primary focus on the financial reporting and SOX process.  In this position you’ll support the Tax Director with quarterly and year end provision reviews, SOX documentation, account reconciliations, and tax research and analysis.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Review and file Federal and State corporate income tax returns and quarterly estimated taxes.
  • Review monthly, quarterly and annual tax provisions on a GAAP and STAT basis.
  • Review premium tax returns and assessments
  • Review tax account accruals and reconciliations
  • Prepare various tax projections.
  • Identify and develop tax-related strategies and tax planning opportunities.
  • Monitor Federal and State tax developments, determine impact of changes on the Company, and develop implementation plans as needed.
  • Assist with IRS exam process.
  • Manage work and relationships with outside tax consultants
  • Work with auditors on quarterly and annual reporting
  • Compose and review SOX documentation, including drafting of technical memorandums.


Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure, MBA or Masters in Taxation.
  • Minimum of 7 years' work experience in accounting or tax demonstrating strong knowledge of corporate tax requirements.   Prefer 3 or more years' work experience in public (tax) accounting.
  • Ability to travel 35-50% of the year if outside the Winston-Salem or Cleveland market.
  • Excellent organizational, presentation, decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of corporate income tax planning, research and compliance.
  • Understanding of ASC 740 and SAP 101 accounting provisions
  • Understanding of tax law, with particular focus on Subchapter L
  • Demonstrated record of success in improving the approach/results of a corporate tax function.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with key functional areas, such as finance, legal, and claims.
  • Advanced word processing and spreadsheet applications software skills. 
  • History of managing staff and coordinating work among direct reports.  Experience managing across multiple office locations a plus.


Desired Skills:

  • Experience working at or with property and casualty insurance companies
  • Experience with U.S. outbound international tax issues and concepts a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Corporate Tax, Premium Pro and tax research software (Checkpoint, BNA)
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel
