Primary Purpose:

The role of the Underwriting Assistant is to support the Underwriting team in reviewing quotes, new business submissions, endorsements and renewal policies for eligibility.  Focus is on home, auto, package, umbrella, boat, scheduled personal property and dwelling fire programs.  The Underwriting Assistant will regularly communicate with agents and brokers via email and phone, and occasionally will communicate with customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process more complex policy changes according to assigned authority and underwriting instructions
  • Analyze and underwrite assigned risks that require mid-level of underwriting authority for multiple lines of business or a high level of authority within a mono-line.
  • Apply underwriting risk selection techniques to determine the acceptability of new and renewal insurance
  • Analyze, evaluate and classify assigned applications and refer to inspection reports and financial statements to determine acceptability based on rate guidelines and establishes rates
  • Renew previously underwritten risks; analyze and evaluate loss reports, audits and other developed information to determine the need for modification of coverage or premium as well as the need for loss control consultation or policy cancellation
  • Recognize workflow inefficiencies and recommend solutions to resolve
  • Meet productivity and quality requirements as established in department objectives; collaborate with team members to manage work inventories
  • Field phone calls from external and internal customers; work to resolve service issues and respond to coverage and rating issues/questions
  • Provide technical support as needed to agents on processes and procedures
  • Build positive working relationships with internal and external customers
  • Review/approve endorsements within authority level established
  • Participate in projects, as directed by management
  • Review home inspections and gather information to resolve valuation discrepancies.
  • Obtain policy information for policies above underwriting authority and refer to Underwriters and Management.
  • Additional responsibilities and authority levels, compared to an Underwriting Assistant I, and an expectation to handle work more productively and independently

Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • 3+ years of  Insurance industry experience
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Must perform well in high-energy, dynamic and team-oriented environments
  • Effective organization and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure and adhere to project deadlines

Desired Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Experience using multiple processing systems
  • Willingness to act as a valued team member
  • Experience with high net worth Personal Lines insurance products.
